Feedback from the Trade on Their Plans and Interest in the USA Pear Season:

Importers are expected to receive their first USA Pear shipments in the upcoming weeks. Other importers continued requesting quotations and expect to import their first loads during November to supply their clients for the Christmas season. They mentioned that prices at origin will be a key factor in their purchasing decisions; however, they have noted lower prices compared to previous seasons. In addition, importers mentioned that they will not continue importing pears from Argentina due to the predominance of large sizes. For this reason, USA Pears represent a good opportunity in the market during this season.

Expectations for Any Freight or Logistics Challenges:

Trade members do not anticipate any logistical issues that could affect USA Pear import volumes during the current season. They plan to manage their purchases in advance to avoid potential delays during the Christmas season.

Opportunities in Your Market for Specific Varieties, Sizes, and Grades:

Trade members are mainly interested in Anjou and Packham varieties for this season, but they are also open to import other varieties such as Bosc and Red Anjou if prices are competitive. In terms of sizes, they prefer small and medium pears. Regarding quality grades, U.S. No. 1 is the preferred, followed by Fancy.

Update on the Competition in the Market:

Chilean pears reported the highest volumes in the market, reaching 65% pear market share at wholesale , with 68% share in supermarket stores and 65% in traditional channels. Packham was the only variety available in the market; good sales and quality were reported. Volumes are expected to decrease for the next month because importers will not receive more loads. Domestic pears reported 30% pear market share in the wholesale sector, 28% share in supermarket stores and 30% in traditional channels; sales and quality were reported as good during this month; volumes are expected to remain at the same level for the next month. Pears from Argentina reported 5% pear market share at wholesale, with 4% share in supermarket stores and 5% in traditional channels. Packham was the only variety available; sales and quality were reported as good. Volumes are expected to decrease during the next month, because importers will not receive more loads.

Political or Economic Issues Impacting Imports, Retail, or Consumer Behavior:

There are no significant political or economic factors expected to impact USA Pear import volumes in Colombia. However, according to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Colombian economy is projected to grow by approximately 2.5% in 2025 and 2.7% in 2026, supported mainly by domestic consumption while investment continues to recover gradually. Inflation remains persistent at around 5%, which continues to influence consumer purchasing power. To stimulate economic activity, the Central Bank has maintained its cycle of interest rate cuts.

Other Brief Comments:

The fresh-produce market in Colombia continues to expand, valued at approximately US$6.9 billion in 2025, with fruits representing around 57 % of total sales. Consumption of imported fruits such as apples and pears is increasing, driven by healthier eating trends. Retail dynamics also show that Colombian consumers are prioritizing quality, added value, and experience over quantity. Retail chains and importers are seeking premium fruit varieties and consistent supply to meet these evolving preferences.
