Feedback from the Trade on Their Plans and Interest in the USA Pear Season:
Trade have shown interest in increasing volume of USA Pear orders if more product becomes available. In the beginning of the season, there was a renewed effort from some traders to establish contact with packers and exporters directly instead of buying product through brokers. One wholesaler that operates its own import and distribution network in the Gulf States region has been unable to meet their desired target of USA Pears. Retailers are interested in stocking USA Pears. There is only a small range of pear varieties available in stores now.
Expectations for Any Freight or Logistics Challenges:
USA Pear shipments for two traders are expected to arrive around Dec. 10 - 15.
Opportunities in Your Market for Specific Varieties, Sizes, and Grades:
USA Pears (especially Red Anjou) perform well in the UAE. Trade are very interested in any new varieties that ship well. Gourmet or special high-quality fruit with nice packaging are an emerging trend in the region. South Korean Shingo pears as well as one or two Dutch varieties are priced much higher than the market average, but are moving well.
Update on the Competition in the Market:
So far, USA Pears' strongest competitors this season are South Africa and the EU. Several varieties of Dutch pears can be seen in all hypermarket chains. Despite some difficulties importing South African pears due to logistical challenges at the port of origin, South Africa remains a strong competitor. Packham, Vermont, Forelle, and Rosemary pears are very common. Pears from Turkey and Lebanon can also be seen in hypermarkets, although volume is low.
Political or Economic Issues Impacting Imports, Retail, or Consumer Behavior:
It remains to be seen whether the ceasefire deal signed between Israel and Lebanon leads to a broader de-escalation in the region. However, for the time being, Houthi attacks against merchant shipping and the war in Gaza are still ongoing.
